Airline WOW Air ceases operations and cancels all flights

Icelandic ultra-low-cost carrier, WOW Air, has ceased operations and cancelled all their flights leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

In a statement on its website the airline, which had earlier suspended all its flights, told passengers there would be no further flights and advised them to check flights with other airlines for ways to reach their destinations.

WOW air’s collapses comes after months of financial difficulties and failed negotiations to sell the carrier to Icelandair and Indigo Partners.

“I will never forgive myself for not acting sooner,” Skuli Mogensen, founder of WOW Air, said in a letter to employees Thursday. “WOW was clearly an incredible airline and we were on the path to do amazing things again.”

What can you do?

Contact your credit card and travel insurance immediately to file a chargeback and get a refund.

If you’ve booked with a third-party booking site, contact them to receive a refund.

Icelandair is also offering discounted economy fares for affected passengers for return flights from Europe valid for travel between March 28 and April 11, 2019. They’re offering flights to Toronto and Montreal for $100 USD one-way, which includes a checked bag and carry-on.

They’re asking all stranded passengers who require assistance to fill out this form with information about your WOW Air flight.

End of cheap flights to Europe?

Whether you liked them or not, WOW Air was constantly the cheapest option to Europe with flights constantly in the $300-400s roundtrip. They certainly made travel more affordable for Canadians. With a major competition now out of the picture, moving forward I expect airlines to rise their prices to Europe.

Goodbye personal item bag. I hardly knew you 🙁
