Charming Town of Gibara, Cuba

We recently were invited on a FAM trip by Hola Sun Vacations to experience what there is to offer on the east side of Cuba. After only having been to Varadero a few times in the past with day trips to Havana, we were very impressed by Holguín and its surrounding areas. It was a whole new world with lush greenery and nature and lively friendly locals. In this series of blogs, we’re going to take you through our amazing journey of discovering a unique area in Cuba! If you’re planning a trip to Cuba, we highly recommend using Hola Sun Vacations.

If you’re looking for a truly authentic Cuban experience, then look no further than the charming town of Gibara, a coastal city on Gibara Bay. We recently had the opportunity to visit Gibara and were absolutely blown away by the natural beauty, rich culture, and welcoming atmosphere of the place. It had a more relaxing slow-paced vibe, a stark difference from Holguin and Santiago de Cuba.

We boarded a catamaran and started our way toward Gibara. It gave us a good opportunity to see the city from the water.

One of the highlights of the city was touring Hotel Ordono, a beautiful colonial-style hotel located in the heart of the town. The hotel is the tallest building in the city and was filled with antique furnishings and artwork. It had beautiful stain-glass windows and painted ceilings that mimicked French palaces.

The rooms seemed spacious and comfortable, and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful.

A beautiful square in the middle of the city houses the Statue of Liberty and Iglesia de San Fulgencio.

We dined for lunch at Restaurant Rio de Mares, which is located just a short walk from Hotel Ordono. The restaurant offers stunning views of Gibara Bay. The menu features a range of delicious seafood dishes, and the service was impeccable.

Another highlight of my trip was watching Trio Galace, an all-female group, perform as we ate lunch, This talented group of musicians played traditional Cuban music, and their energy and passion were truly infectious. They have been performing together since they were young. It was an unforgettable experience.

Overall, our trip to Gibara was an absolute delight. From the charming Hotel Ordono to the delicious food at Restaurant Rio de Mares to the unforgettable performance by Trio Galace, there was truly something for everyone in this charming Cuban town.
